The rich exoticism of the Orient blends with the mysticism of Ancient Egypt in Raffles Dubai. Modernity meets history; the mythical merges with the factual and the Far East seamlessly unites with the Middle East. Our understanding of Egyptian culture, architecture and design was shaped by a research trip to the heady city of Luxor, where majestic stone pillars and a grand sense of scale were evident in many of the city’s historical sites. The 8m high lobby of Raffles was accentuated with large stone columns flanking the central walkway and we sloped the stone walls inwards to present the illusion of being inside a pyramid.
